"Dreams: Night School" ... practice of threat situations in dreaming. "Sleep provides practice. People given brainteasers before bed dream about the answers. Math students are all too familiar with dreams about algebra problems. Anyone who's ever played too much Tetris knows you can start having Tetris dreams." Tetris as game. Ref to BR's comment about WoW dream, not being able to cast fireball when faced with threat.

In the last presentation I did with Real Life Real Talk (sex ed for parents), there was a lot of interest in online social networking sites and how teens use them."

Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenberg County has the ImaginOn: highly interactive website, heavily games-driven, informative, entertaining, with gaming tournaments. http://www.imaginon.org/index.asp

-- reportedly (SD, verbal 12/20/07) this is the model Phoenix Public is integrating with its Teen Central (which was itself developed on the model of LA Public's Teen'Scape space). Teen Central has been very successful; likelihood is that they'll handle their gaming and imagination space equally ably. To be watched.

This may not be a "tangent" but quite relevant once I look further....

Described by John Fudrow http://gaminglearningandlibraries.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=917484%3ABlogPost%3A1621 (acq 26oct) as:

"Thanks to a wonderful team of library members, game design students, and the support of the Buhl Foundation; the first library games have been made live at Carnegie Mellon University.

The games are meant to address concerns related to Information Literacy and aim to help students develop those skills without the confines of a classroom. The short finish time and addictive game play makes these games worthy of note in the developments in library gaming.

Check them out for yourself at the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries’ homepage. Keep in mind that these are still in beta and may still have a few kinks to work out."

.....compare ASU literacy game Quarantined: http://library.west.asu.edu/game/quarantined/login.cfm which Carnegie Mellon links to.

 from Webkinz website:

"Webkinz World is a great place to learn and play!

  • Your child can learn lots of fun facts at Quizzy's. The questions at Quizzy's are age-appropriate, and most are educationally based.
  • We also have several arcade games that promote learning:
    • Lunch Letters helps children to learn how to type and spell
    • Quizzy's Word Challenge aids in spelling
    • Operation Gumball encourages children to think logically
  • Webkinz Newz and the W Tales encourage reading, and our many contests encourage writing, creativity, and problem-solving.
  • Your child can learn about money in Webkinz World; by earning KinzCash, your child learns how to save and spend money.
  • Webkinz World also helps to teach children about responsibility, caring for a pet, and getting along with others."

"Welcome to the School and Fitness Facility section.  This section is meant to offer DDR supplies that are durable enough to be used in these types of locations because they are extra durable and can be used under constant rigorous conditions.  We have bundled some packages below that are popular choices for many of our customers who purchase for school districts, fitness facilities and even corporate gyms.  Our customers include fitness instructors, school physical education teachers who have implemented DDR into their ciriculums, recreation centers and more.  DDR is quickly becoming the hottest new workout worldwide.  It's vast popularity is because of many of the unique features of the game.  Not only is it wildy fun to play but it has proven health benefits such as improved circulation, weight loss, muscle toning and more.  The games even keep track of calories burned!  When introduced into a competitive environment, people who are normally not very active can quickly become hooked on excersise!  These bundles are also perfect for competitive DDR tournaments.  "  -- http://store.gameasylum.us/scandfifa.html

Then again, there's this stereotype...

Or has the stereotype truly started to crumble? Well, not to look at them, but now you're in good hands with gamers (oops sorry, wrong company):
